With more American travelers looking for domestic options for their upcoming vacations I am partial to suggesting Charleston for your next getaway.  Where else would a world traveler choose to live? The small city deserves its reputation, and it’s the only place that can hold me at home. I love exploring the hotels, restaurants, and sights of my hometown and nothing gives me greater happiness than to share a little Southern hospitality with clients.

I’ve compiled a selection of ten charming Charleston hotels that each have unique qualities to appeal to guest’s individual needs and desires. Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway, a family looking to experience historical sites, or a group celebrating a special occasion we can match you with the perfect hotel and create a delightful Charleston escape tailored just for you.

86 Cannon

Couples looking for an adult-only, boutique experience in Charleston will love 86 Cannon. This 5-room all-king bed inn located in a fully restored, three-story circa 1860’s single house has the perfect ambiance of updated Southern luxury. With the recent renovation of the property next door the inn now boasts two new Garden Cottage Suites plus a beautiful outdoor courtyard space. Located a short distance from the tourist area, the eclectic Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood is ideal for foodies that want to experience the nearby restaurants, bakeries, and shops. With daily breakfast, afternoon wine and cheese, use of bikes and a friendly staff, 86 Cannon is the perfect home base for a historic – yet modern Charleston getaway.

Belmond Charleston Place

Surrounded by some of Charleston’s most historic buildings, Charleston Place exudes 17th-century majesty.  A quick walk through the grand lobby will uncover an eclectic collection of world-renowned stores. For rest and relaxation, head to the full-service spa where you’ll find a saltwater infinity pool with retractable roof.

Retreat to one of the 434 recently renovated guestrooms and suites or enjoy a more private experience at the exclusive Club Level that provides an upscale experience for guests with dedicated staff and all-day complimentary food and beverage.  Like all good Southern establishments, true soul is found in cooking. At Charleston Grill acclaimed Executive Chef Michelle Weaver’s elegant plates put a modern spin on local tradition and come served with a helping of live jazz. The Palmetto Cafe offers great Lowcountry plates in a gorgeous garden-style setting, while the Thoroughbred Club’s expert mixologist pairs bespoke bourbons with the freshest ingredients. Traditional pub fare can be found at Meeting at Market—a warm and inviting atmosphere for gathering and sports enthusiasts.

The Dewberry Charleston

This 155-room hotel is built in the shell of a 1960’s federal building in the heart of Museum Mile overlooking Marion Square. John Dewberry describes his hotel as “Southern reimagined” which has a mid-century-modern look with a hint of Charleston charm. In each hotel room, there is not a closet, but an armoire to go along with a

long-standing tradition in Charleston homes. The rooms have beautiful chandeliers, floor-to-ceiling windows, gorgeous marble bathrooms, luxurious linens, and a minibar unlike any other with delicious local products.  The juxtaposition of past and present continues with dining options. Henrietta’s dishes draw influences from around the globe presented in the unpretentious spirit of a traditional French brasserie.  The communal area of the hotel called The Living Room is the perfect place to enjoy coffee, cocktails, or small plate items. The Dewberry’s 8th floor terrace on the highest rooftop in Charleston hosts a whimsical adult-only rooftop lounge, the Citrus Club, featuring citrus-inspired cocktails, and fresh lite bites.

To add to the city’s eclectic culinary scene the hotel provides a range of choices to suit all cravings.  In addition to Gabrielle, the signature restaurant boasting classic and comfortable dishes inspired by the Big Easy, enjoy the sophisticated Camellias bar, which includes an etched-mirrored ceiling and reclaimed pink marble from the former Charleston Library for its floor, bar and table tops; the chic La Pâtisserie just off King Street; and the iconic rooftop bar, Fiat Lux.

The Restoration

The Restoration offers two distinct ways in which to relax in Charleston with either a true home away from home experience in The Residences or the Upscale Hotel.  Spread across five buildings with 20 residences and 24 hotel suites, this Lowcountry treasure has been transformed into luxury apartment suites and private condos with full kitchens or kitchenettes. Each one projects a classic elegance and relaxed Southern vibe

with contemporary elements such as open-plan layouts, exposed brickwork, and capacious living areas.  The Restoration promises to fully immerse you into the “New South” experience, which aims to make each guest feel part of its creative and innovative community.  This can be achieved by riding one of the hotel’s custom-designed bicycles around the city and dining in The Watch: Rooftop Kitchen & Spirits farm-to-table restaurant in addition to visiting the jewel box-inspired Amethyst Spa & Nail Bar, Rise Coffee Bar and checking out the luxury goods at The Port Mercantile Retail Store and cultural library.

Wentworth Mansion

A 21-room tribute to Charleston’s gilded age, the historic Wentworth Mansion exudes the glamour and grandeur of the Holy City. Italian crystal chandeliers, hand-carved marble fireplaces, and Tiffany stained glass create a setting of gracious hospitality, further enhanced by luxurious amenities and thoughtful guest experiences – all just a short stroll from King Street’s world-class

dining and shopping.  Tucked within the original carriage house of the mansion, Circa 1886, has been frequently voted one of the best and romantic hotel restaurants in the country.  Chef Marc Collins’ stellar cuisine is enjoyed by all who long for a lighter, brighter take on classic Lowcountry fare.  Just steps away in the original mansion’s stables you’ll find an intimate spa with striking architectural details including 14-foot vaulted ceilings, arched windows, exposed brick, and rustic beams, that creates an air of tranquility for your spa experience.

Zero George Street Hotel

Zero George Street consists of three Charleston residences and two brick carriage houses that date back to 1804. The buildings are immaculately restored with state-of-the-art amenities and 16 casually elegant guestrooms. You can relax any time of day on your furnished piazza overlooking the private courtyard or have a drink in one of the

beautifully appointed parlors.  The staff of Zero George aim to delight, spoil and surprise you as they serve up Old World authenticity with contemporary upscale hospitality. You don’t have to travel far for dining at one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in the area. The Zero Restaurant + Bar is an intimate restaurant that has very limited seating and only takes a handful of reservations a night, so make sure to book well in advance.
