Travelers bound for Europe often want to visit more than one country. Malta is an excellent option to add onto your next adventure.

Malta is literally in the center of the Mediterranean with frequent direct flights from most European cities, making it easy to enjoy 3-5 days on the islands discovering the history and contemporary life.

While you could pair Malta with many destinations, it is a 1 hour and 25 minute flight to Rome (MLA to FCO) or a 1 hour and 45 minute ferry from Valletta, Malta to Pozzallo, Sicily, making it a great beginning or end to a trip to Italy.

Let’s get to know Malta:

The Islands

There are approximately 20 islands that make up Malta, though only the three main ones are inhabited. Malta is home to 400,000 people, Gozo is home to 35,000 people and only 4 people live on Comino but thousands of tourists visit daily to visit the Blue Lagoon.

Malta offers a spectacular variety of landscapes, from stretches of arid land and rugged, sea-carved coastlines to ancient medieval architecture.

Size

Malta is only 17 miles long and 9 miles wide.  It should take no more than 40 minutes to drive across the whole island.

Getting Around

In Malta, cars drive on the left side of the road. There is a fair amount of traffic, making it not the best destination to rent a car.  Cabs and private transfers (car or boat) are the best ways for visitors to get around the islands.

Where to Stay

No matter where you stay, you’re never really far from anything.

  • St Julian’s has nightlife, restaurants, bars and 5-star hotels.
  • Sliema, Bugibba, Mellieha, Gozo are all areas for those wanting to be by the water.
  • Valletta is the cultural hub with hip and quirky hotels.
Weather

The islands boast a typically Mediterranean almost tropical climate, characterized by hot dry summers and mild winters. With approximately 300 days of sunshine annually, there is ample time to enjoy good weather and the sea.

History

Malta has been ruled by just shy of 15 empires.  The islands comprise countless historical sites include Megalithic temples, fortifications, Baroque cathedrals and palaces.  Some temples are over 3,500 years old (older than Stonehenge and the pyramids).  Most of the old fortified cities were built over 500 years ago and are still inhabited today.

Language

Maltese and English are the official languages. Many residents also speak Italian.

Currency

As a member of the European Union, the currency is the euro.

Religion

Approximately 90% of the population is Roman Catholic.  Maltese are highly tolerant and extend some of the most liberal LGBT rights across the globe.

There are approximately 365 churches and chapels spread across the islands. One for every day of the year.  The most famous church is St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

Food/Drink

Maltese food has been described as rustic, full of flavor and color with influences from both Europe and North Africa. However, its adaptation using ingredients that are easily available locally is what makes Maltese food truly unique.

A popular fast-food is ‘pastizz’ which is layers of special, buttery, pastry stuffed with ricotta or a pea-mush. This treat is often enjoyed with a cup of tea.

The Maltese love their local drinks. The islands produce flavorful liquors, digestives, wines and beer.

Shopping

Mementos from Malta include traditional lace, silver filigree, fine mouth blown glass, ceramics and pottery.

Fashionistas must visit the Charles & Ron flagship store.

Sports and Activities

The calmness and clarity of the sea makes for excellent visibility creating the perfect conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving.

With year-round sailing opportunities yachts can enjoy soft winds, protected anchorages, unique caves, beautiful sandy beaches, and views of ancient cityscapes.

Horseback riding is a popular activity for locals and visitors. Horse racing is one of Malta’s prime spectator sports. The events are held every Sunday, between October and May.

Those looking for a peaceful place to practice yoga have many tranquil options throughout the islands.

On-Screen

Malta is breathtaking in person and it certainly sparkles on-screen. The range of topography in such a small area, Mediterranean features and ability to façade regions such as Ancient Rome and the modern-day Middle East makes Malta an ideal filming location.  Chances are, you’ve seen some of the 100 + movies/shows filmed on the islands including The Da Vinci Code, Gladiator, World War Z, Game of Thrones, and Troy.

In a short amount of time visitors can take in the blue Mediterranean, old walled cities and culture of Malta.

Keep dreaming. We’re here when you’re ready.
